What is the best age for the initial orthodontic exam?
The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that every child visit the orthodontist by age 7. A visit at an even younger age is advisable if a particular problem has been identified by a parent, family dentist or child's physician.
What is the best age for treatment to begin?
Generally, bone or jaw problems are best addressed at an earlier age. An upper or lower jaw that is growing too much or not enough, is too wide, too narrow, or crooked can be recognized at an early age. Because children are growing rapidly, they can benefit enormously from an early phase of orthodontic/orthopedic treatment. Generally, patients with more ideal bite relationships and adequate spacing can wait for all the permanent teeth to erupt before starting orthodontic treatment.
What are some of the advantages of early (phase 1) treatment?
Phase I treatment is generally indicated when there is a skeletal discrepancy. Certain types of orthodontic appliances including expansion appliances and Herbst appliances may help prevent the later removal of permanent teeth to correct overcrowding and also prevent certain surgical procedures to align the upper and lower jaws. Early treatment can also decrease the time necessary for the 2nd phase (full braces) of treatment. Leaving a malocclusion untreated until all of the permanent teeth erupt could result in a jaw discrepancy too severe to allow achievement of an ideal result with braces alone.
Does early treatment eliminate the need for braces later?
Not generally, but it does often reduce the treatment time of the 2nd phase of treatment and may also allow for a more ideal and aesthetic result.
What is the best way to decide if my child or myself needs orthodontic treatment?
Dr. Phillips offers a complimentary initial orthodontic evaluation for children, adolescents, and adults. Dr. Phillips makes every attempt at this initial evaluation to explain the patient's orthodontic problems and also all available treatment options.
What is the cost of orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment fees are based on the complexity and duration of each individual case.
How does one pay for their orthodontic treatment?
We have a number of different payment plans. Generally the fee is divided into monthly payments over the duration of treatment. However, Orthodontists Fee Plan also offers payment plans with no initial down payment and the balance being spread over as many as 60 months.
